Introduction to Bone Density
Bone density or bone mineral density (BMD) is the number of bone minerals in bone tissue. The idea is of mass of mineral per volume of bone (referring to density in the physics sense), even though clinically it is measured via way of means of proxy in keeping with optical density per square centimetre of the bone floor upon imaging. However, its measurement is utilized in medical medication as an indirect indicator of osteoporosis and fracture risk. It is measured via way of means of a system referred to as densitometry, often done within the radiology or nuclear medication departments of hospitals or clinics. The measurement is painless and non-invasive and includes low radiation exposure. Measurements are maximum usually made over the lumbar spine and the top of a part of the hip. Furthermore, the forearm can be scanned if the hip and lumbar spine aren’t accessible.
Foods that can lower your Bone Density
1. Highly salted food
Excessive consumption of salted food makes your body release more Calcium which could harm BMD. Therefore, Sodium contaminated foods should be avoided. Do not intake sodium more than 2300 mg in a day.
Caffeine consumption is bad for bone density. It can affect BMD negatively. It increases the risk of hip fracture and also, decreases the calcium retention ability in the body. Every 100 mg consumption of caffeine can make you lose about 6 mg of calcium.
Soda containing soft drinks available in the market such as Coke, dew etc. contain a high amount of Phosphoric acid. For that reason, This acid affects the calcium/phosphorus ratio which ultimately results in decreased BMD.
According to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, extreme or excessive consumption of alcohol decreases the BMD and make the bones weak. Therefore, the risk of osteoporosis increases the risk of osteoporosis particularly.
Consumption of a high amount of Phytates containing legumes such as Pinto beans, navy beans, and peas do not let the body absorb or retain calcium. Therefore, the Intake of Phytates affects the Calcium absorbing ability of the body.
