Hashimoto’s Diet: Foods to avoid

Hashimoto or hypothyroidism is a state when the thyroid gland produces fewer hormones than the needs of the body. Lack of thyroid can cause weight gain, fatigue, and slow metabolism.

According to doctors, treatment usually involves thyroid supplements, in form of tablets. Diet doesn’t play a very important role in the process, but some food can help to maintain required thyroid levels. Similarly, some food can trigger thyroid levels and worsen the symptoms.

So, what are the foods that are safe and what should avoid?

Hashimoto: What does the diet look like?

There is no clinically proven diet for hypothyroidism patients, rather a personalized approach is required. However, there are some general guidelines for them.
The following nutrients are essential in a diet:

1. Iodine

Lack of iodine causes hypothyroidism. So, iodine is the main nutrient to be focused on. One can consume iodine-rich salt, or fish, dairy, and eggs.

2. Selenium

This nutrient helps to activate the thyroid hormones. It also has antioxidant benefits that protect the gland from damage. Rich selenium foods are sardines, tunas, nuts, and legumes.

3. Zinc

Another nutrient that helps to activate the thyroid hormone. It regulates TSH which indicates the gland release more hormones. Zinc can be found in chicken, beef, and other shell foods.

Food to avoid while following Hashimoto’s diet

While some of the nutrients and food help to activate the hormones, some of them can gradually damage the hormone levels.
Foods containing goitrogens and soy should be avoided by hypothyroidism patients. Food with high calories should also be avoided because these lead to easy weight gain.

List of foods that you should avoid:

1. Millets
2. Highly processed foods
3. Peaches and strawberries
4. Soy-based foods like soy milk
5. Coffee, tea, and alcohol
6. Tofu and tempeh
7. Cookies with goitrogens
8. Gluten food
9. Added sugar

As a Hashimoto patient, you should always remain in constant touch with your medical supervisor. Hashimoto’s diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats.
