How does Vitamin D help in insulin secretion?

One of the most essential hormones in your body is Insulin which helps to regulate sugar levels. Secreted by the pancreas, a gland behind your stomach, and facilitates your body to use glucose.
Sometimes, due to common type 2 diabetes, the level of insulin gets low and hence needs supplementation. Whereas supplementation can have adverse effects on the body like weight gain. But there are some natural ones too. One of them is vitamin D.

Vitamin D – Benefits and Sources

Vitamin D, also known as calciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin responsible for increasing the absorption of nutrients. But our body is incapable of creating it, and hence must be consumed in the diet.

Vitamin D

Some of the benefits are:
1. Promotes healthy bones and teeth
2. Strengthens immune and nervous system
3. Supports cardiovascular health
4. Keeps the bones strong and healthy

Some of the sources of the vitamin are oily fishes (such as salmon, herring, mackerel), red meat, cod liver oil, egg yolks, mushroom, soy milk, cereal, and oatmeal.

Vitamin D and Insulin sensitivity

Health specialists believe that calciferol is quite effective in controlling insulin secretion. It improves the body’s response to insulin and reduces insulin resistance.

According to the European Journal of Endocrinology, a study determined the effects of 6-month supplementation of vitamin D on insulin sensitivity and secretion. For individuals who had type 2 diabetes, supplementation for 6 months increased peripheral insulin sensitivity and β-cell production.

Another study by the National Library of Medicine shows that deficiency of the vitamin can cause diabetes. It also stated that the vitamin is proficient enough to modify the risk of cardiovascular, diabetes type 2, and hypertension.

Vitamin D is pretty efficient in treating diabetes and increasing insulin secretion. However, consulting a doctor before any diet changes are advised.
