What is Posture? Importance of Good Posture

Good posture on the other hand refers to “the three natural curves present in the healthy spine.” It can be defined as the position in which someone holds their body while sitting and standing. Poor posture refers to when our spine is positioned in an unnatural position.  This often leads to pain in the muscles, joints, and ligaments by putting too much pressure on them. Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and lying in such poor forms lead to a build-up in pressure in these tissues as well as extreme pain in the neck and shoulder. However, you can reserve this and improve your posture and muscles with adequate stretching and exercising.

A few reasons for Postural Dysfunction are as follows :

  1. Lack of awareness of good posture
  2. Muscle weakness
  3. Sedentary lifestyle
  4. Working habits
  5. Poor core stability
  6. Muscle tightness
  7. Slouching
  8. Pot belly
  9. Rounded shoulders

Whether you are supported by muscles or a supportive chain, good posture requires less energy. The more comfortable your body is, the more energy you save for movements you make. Low back pains and back problems are most commonly arising because most people have firsthand knowledge of the causes and treatment. Some people also struggle with more serious issues such as spondylosis, arthritis, herniated disc, etc. With aging, there is a decline in bone density as well problems related to supporting muscles.

To conclude, gaining a bad posture is something that happens over a period of time, especially for those who work from home. Therefore, the most efficient posture is when there is the proper alignment of the spine and placing your ears in with the midline of the body. Bad posture occurs when the spine is unaligned.
