Beta-alanine is one of the most consumed amino acid supplements used by athletes and trainers to enhance muscle mass and improve overall health. Beta-alanine supplements interact with histidine in your body to produce what is called carnosine, a chemical that is known to reduce fatigue and increase muscle strength. Although, there are no major side effects of beta-alanine some people often complain about a feeling or a sensation of tingling after its consumption. This article digs a little deeper into the reasons for this sensation caused by the supplement.

The tingling sensation is the most commonly associated side effect of beta-alanine and is named paraesthesia. The intensity of this sensation however varies from person to person and usually depends upon the threshold level of the individual to the extent of their daily dose. Although it is not harmful to the body, it still causes physical problems like itching or rashes. The most common reason for this side effect is often an overdose of the supplement regularly. Since the beta-alanine supplement is known to interact with your central nervous system, some nerves might feel a bit pressured due to the consumption as a result of which they produce this prickling sensation in the body. However, the feeling is temporary and fades away after some time even after high doses of the supplement.

Many scientists have scientifically explained this activity of beta-alanine as they activate the G protein-coupled receptors which are responsible for stimulating the nervous system and transmission of signals, especially to the skin. Basically, the amino acids activate your nerve endings that cause beta-alanine to result in a feeling of tingle and itchiness, but not enough pain. The tingling is often felt 10-15 minutes after the consumption of beta-alanine and can last up to a few minutes or hours depending on how the individual’s body reacts to it. Some people often don’t even feel anything.
