Atkins Diet: Why Is It So Popular

Proposed by Robert Atkins in the 1970s, it is a low carbohydrate diet. It was seen as a way to quickly achieve weight loss through a high protein, high fat diet, with a deficit of carbs. It targeted the fact that carbohydrates are a source of weight gain. Hence, following a low carb diet is important for weight loss. And this diet plan has gained enormous popularity since 2000.

The Atkins diet is popular because people are getting benefits by following this diet plan. When we avoid carbs during a particular period, our body creates a void. The proteins and good fats take up the void. Unlike carbs, these nutrients don’t let us binge eat or arouse hunger.  Furthermore, proteins have a tendency that when eaten, it makes us full for a longer period. Therefore, our body won’t be devoid of food and there would be easy weight loss. 

Phases Of Atkins Diet

Atkins diet is classified into four phases:

1. Induction Phase

In this phase, one is supposed to take less than 20 grams of carbs for the first 15 days. For instance, one can have plenty of proteins and good fats such as eggs, meat, and leafy vegetables. 

2. Balancing Phase

After that time period, gradually bring some carbs into your diet. Start with extra almonds and cashew nuts. Also, you can have low carb fruits.  

3. Fine Tuning Phase

When you feel like your weight loss goal is just about to get touched, add a little more carbs. However, don’t rush to get more carbs than expected. 

4. Maintaining Phase

Owing that you have achieved your aimed weight, add as much carbs as you like. You can finally bring back good carbs to your diet and enjoy your meal !

What To Eat

  • Animal protein sources like eggs, chicken, lamb, beef, etc.
  • Salmon, sardines, etc.
  • Leafy greens like spinach, broccoli, etc.
  • Fast sources like yogurt, cheese, butter, cream and many more.
  • Nuts like almonds, walnuts.
  • Seeds like flax seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

What Not To Eat

  • Artificial sweeteners and sugar
  • Vegetable oils like soybean oil.
  • Grains like cereals
  • Processed and packaged foodstuffs
  • Lentils, beans, etc.
