What is Linoleic Acid?
Linoleic and the family of fatty acids derived from it is very essential for our diet. The commonly known acids are Omega -3 and alpha-linoleic. Fatty acids are an important source of energy for the human body. Linoleic acid, an omega – 3 fatty acid is determined as essential fatty acid because humans cannot synthesize them.
Studies show that there are more than 60 exciting acids in the blood plasma, however, only very few prove biologically appropriate. These fatty acids can either be in their saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids forms. They can have carbons between 2 and 36 atoms in length. Evidently, linoleic acid is an indispensable nutrient to the human body.
How does it effect health?
Epidemiological studies about fatty acids and human health reveal how certain major groups of fatty acids are easily associated with a variety of health effects. Furthermore, linoleic acids play a crucial role in the assistance and support of heart health. There exists some evidence claiming that linoleic acids prove to regulate blood pressure and improve insulin responsiveness.
A diet pertaining to the maximum level of nutrients is essential for humans. Evidently, excess or insufficient amounts of certain fatty acids can lead to serious health problems. Linoleic acid plays an important role in hair growth, brain functioning, reproduction as well as energy levels.
Omega – 3 or alpha-linolenic acid and omega-6, otherwise known as linoleic acid are the two main fatty acids. These acids lack hydrogen atoms and consist of two or more double bonds that are usually found in fatty acids. This is dominant in PUFA – polyunsaturated fatty acid. Consumption of vegetable oils like soybean, corn, sunflower including seeds and nuts is a great source of linoleic acid.
